All NUTT Hydraulic Brakes Oil Change & Full Maintenance Guide

1. Recommended Hydraulic Mineral Oil Replacement Cycles for All NUTT Brake Systems

The service interval varies based on your daily riding style and road environment, follow the matching cycle below to keep stable braking performance:

Scenario 1: Daily City Commuting (Flat road, ≤20km/day, low speed)

Oil replacement cycle: Every 12 months

Why: Light braking load leads to slow oil oxidation; regular annual oil change protects internal caliper sealing rings and avoids soft brake feel.

Scenario 2: Frequent Off-Road & Hill Riding (Rough ground, ≥30km/day, medium speed)

Oil replacement cycle: Every 6–8 months

Why: Mud, dust and continuous brake friction generate high heat, accelerating oil deterioration and shortening seal service life.

Scenario 3: High-Speed Modified Performance Scooters (Max speed 70km/h+)

Oil replacement cycle: Every 4–6 months

Why: Frequent emergency braking creates extreme high temperature, quickly darkens mineral oil and reduces clamping force of NUTT 4-piston calipers.

Urgent Oil Replacement Warning Signs

Change oil ahead of schedule if any of the following situations appears:

  • Brake lever feels spongy, braking power obviously weakened after repeated squeezing
  • Original transparent golden oil turns dark brown or black
  • Small air bubbles keep appearing after full bleeding
  • Brake assembly soaked by heavy rain or puddle water
  • Abnormal shaking or delayed braking during high-speed riding

2. Mandatory Rules for NUTT Brake Oil Replacement

  • Only use dedicated mineral oil designed for electric scooter hydraulic brakes. Never use automotive DOT brake fluid; DOT fluid will corrode internal seals and cause permanent oil leakage.
  • Do not mix mineral oil of different brands. Mixed fluid triggers chemical reaction inside the caliper and damages piston structure.
  • Always install new copper sealing washers on all banjo hose joints when disassembling the brake pipeline to prevent seepage.
  • After every oil change, complete full air bleeding for the entire brake circuit; residual air is the top cause of poor braking performance.

3. Step-by-Step Full Oil Bleeding Operation (For All NUTT Brake Calipers)

  1. Lift the scooter to suspend wheels, prepare bleed kit, fresh mineral oil, rags and waste oil container.
  2. Open the oil reservoir cap on hydraulic brake lever, fill mineral oil up to the MAX mark.
  3. Connect the bleed tube to the bleed screw at the bottom of your NUTT caliper, put the tube end into waste oil basin.
  4. Loosen the bleed screw slightly, squeeze brake lever slowly and repeatedly. Keep refilling oil in the lever tank while pumping.
  5. Stop bleeding only when clear oil without any air bubbles flows out of the tube, then tighten the bleed screw firmly.
  6. Wipe all spilled mineral oil completely, tighten the reservoir cap, spin wheels to check rotor rubbing.
  7. Take a low-speed test ride and brake repeatedly to confirm firm brake feedback.

4. Routine Daily Maintenance Checklist for NUTT Hydraulic Brakes

  • Every 50km ride: Check brake hose joints for oil seepage; wipe dust on brake disc and pads
  • Every 3 months: Inspect brake pad thickness; replace pads immediately if thinner than 1mm
  • Every oil change: Check caliper pistons for rust or abnormal sticking
  • Long-term storage (over 1 month): Fully bleed old oil and refill fresh mineral oil to avoid seal aging

5. Common Brake Fault Quick Troubleshooting

  • Soft brake lever: Trapped air in pipeline → Re-do full bleeding
  • Oil leakage at hose connection: Missing/worn copper washers → Replace sealing washers
  • Constant disc rubbing: Caliper not centered on rotor → Loosen bolts and readjust position
  • Abnormal brake noise: Bent rotor or worn brake pads → Replace damaged accessories
  • Slow brake reset: Dirty caliper pistons → Clean pistons and replace mineral oil
